Creator

Description
American soldier halting German soldier, who is standing over woman holding child.
While there have obviously been veterans as long as America has fought wars, World War I can be seen as a watershed moment in public attitudes toward veterans. On mustering out, each soldier received $60 -- or about enough to buy a new set of clothes -- and by April 1919, 40% of veterans remained unemployed. Veterans' relief organizations such as the American Legion sprung up to help support returning soldiers. Many of our modern ideas about veterans, such as providing healthcare, disability support, and guaranteed pensions, come out of the activism of World War I veterans.
