Title

115 Main Street, Bethany Church

Creator

Carnahan, Paul

Description

In 1868 the Bethany Congregational Society built an impressive Gothic-revival church on the site of the first church building in the city. Designed by Boston architect Charles Edward Parker, the new edifice was unusually ornate for a New England Congregational church. When pieces of stone began falling off the church in 1954, the congregation tore down the structurally unsound sanctuary and replaced it with a building in a modern style. Stones from the earlier structure were used to help it blend in with the older steeple and chapel that remained.
