Description

Erected around 1875, this brick woolen mill replaced a previous structure that had burned in 1873. The original builder and owner was Joseph Gould, who sold the woolen mill to Charles M. Davis in 1900. The quality of the wool was so high that in 1928 Commander Richard E. Byrd ordered underwear of angora fleece for his men to take on an exploration trip to the South Pole. In 1929, Davis sold the mill to Eugene Karr of Barre, Vt. Unfortunately the mill was destroyed by fire in 1934, although the single-story stockhouse survived and was used for other businesses over the years. Today the stockhouse is in private ownership.
