Title

Oral history interview with Mark Stoler

Description

Mark Stoler speaks of growing up in the Bronx, the impact of the death of his mother while attending City College in New York City, and his years as a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He describes incidents at the university, including teach-ins, demonstations, and getting teargassed, and the development of his anti-war stance. He then describes the contrast between Madison and the University of Vermont, where he became a faculty member in 1970, and the relationship between young and old faculty, and the University administration, including the firing of political science professor Michael Parenti in 1971, the occupation of the R.O.T.C. building in 1972, and the employment of women faculty. He also speaks of Bernie Sanders' election as mayor of Burlington and his political impact.
