Description

Black and white photograph with sepia tone shows five individual cabins at the Traveler's Rest Motel, labelled as Montpelier, Vermont, but were actually located on the Barre-Montpelier Road in the town of Berlin. Outside of each structure there is a rocking chair. At the second cabin one can see a car parked along the side and a man and a woman seated out front overlooking the lawn. Someone has drawn an "X" on the cabin in the far right of the frame indicating they'd stayed in that cabin. Information found in Vermont Hotels and Tourist Cabins (1941) lists Hall and Calcagni, proprietors. "Modern conveniences. Accommodations for 26 persons. Cabins. Rooms. Season, May 1-November 15. Rates $1 per day per person meals additional."

These cabins are no longer standing but were located near where Midstate Hyundai is located today (2021). The second historic photograph here (provided by the Berlin Historical Society) shows the relationship of Traveler's Rest to Twin City Cabins and Howard Johnson's. This photo was taken by the Vermont Flying Service about 1950.
