Description

Black and white photograph with sepia tone shows The Traveler's Rest Motel. Interestingly, while this photo is labeled as Barre, Vermont, the building is actually located in Berlin; Barre was merely the mailing address. The Barre-Montpelier Road runs horizontally through the image and the field where the photographer stood, visible in the foreground, would later be the location of the Twin City Drive-in Theater.

There are five small cabins set back from the road with a house in the background that is located on Benjamin Falls Hill which leads up to the Central Vermont Medical Center and the E. F. Knapp Airport. . The large building at the right was part of Traveler’s Rest which contained rooms for rent. It was built with concrete and was known as the “Cement House”. These cabins and the “Cement House” are no longer standing but were located near where Midstate Hyudai is now located (2021).

The second historic photograph, taken by the Vermont Flying Service ca 1950 shows the relationship of Traveler’s Rest to The Twin City Cabins, Howard Johnson’s Restaurant and the Twin City Drive-in Theater.
